Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre

Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre (COBT) is Norman Oklahoma’s resident, professional ballet company that will also tour to other surrounding areas performing classical and contemporary repertoire, and will also feature original choreography. Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre was born from the notion that greater cultural diversity and representation is needed in ballet and classical dance, particularly in the midwest. We strive to inspire audiences and dancers of all races, creeds and nationalities. Our artists are influenced by a diverse cross-section of identities and we believe that inspiration comes in all colors. As a professional ballet company, COBT will provide entertainment and community outreach to the central Oklahoma area in an effort to expose a broader audience to classical and contemporary ballet. COBT’s philosophy is to produce artistic works that speak not only to the classical beauty and artistry of classical ballet, but also reimagine and diversify traditional ballet narratives in order to foster broader inclusivity and cultural representation. COBT endeavors to also collaborate with and commission choreographic works that communicate the diversity of the human experience through the medium of classical dance.

Artistic Director Dr. Sterlin Mosley, a professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma and one of Central Oklahoma Dance Company’s founders, began his dance career at 32 years old and learned firsthand the trials and tribulations of pursuing dance education and performance “against all odds”. After patchworking a proper classical dance education by attending classes at the University of Oklahoma, The Oklahoma City Ballet, and summer workshops in New York City at the Joffrey School, and through learning the Finis Jhung Ballet Technique, he further developed his artistry, technique and passion for dance. However, as his passion for ballet grew, so did his awareness of the various cultural, emotional, psychological, and diversity-specific problems that haunt the world of professional dance and dance training.

As a professor of Human Relations and trained mental health counselor, Sterlin knew that the dance world could do better. He vowed one day to create an inclusive, healthy, and creative space for aspiring dancers to receive an exemplary, well-rounded education regardless of things like socioeconomic status, race, gender, and sexuality. He imagines a world in which artists would have the psychological/emotional resilience, business savvy and most importantly, the awareness necessary to thrive in the world of dance (and the world at large).

With that goal in mind, Sterlin and his best friend, business partner, and co-founder Aaron Addonizio partnered with University of Oklahoma Dance graduate Catie Tramel to bring the vision to fruition, and thus Central Oklahoma Dance Company was born.

We would now like to invite all of you to co-create with us. We’ve outlined the vision and we hope you’ll join us in manifesting it!

As a startup ballet theatre company we need your generous donations to help us begin our creative commitment to the communities we wish to inspire. Fledgling ballet companies can begin working on creative endeavors fairly quickly but a few things are absolutely essential to ensure the success of our organization and its future dancers as Central Oklahoma’s newest professional ballet ensemble. Your generous donation will help fund artists stipends, costumes, administrative support, space rental, ballet barres, theatre rental and the elusive but important pointe shoes that dancers often wear. Help us reach our $30,000 goal so Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre can begin rehearsals for its debut performance of original and classical repertoire in late Fall 2019.

Central Oklahoma Dance Company and Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of Central Dance Company or Central Oklahoma Ballet Theatre must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
